Great piece. I do think if you want to eventually write novels, you should start out writing one. Write too many short stories and a novel becomes a reach where your arms are not long enough.

It's funny, but I did try writing novels first and failed miserably, Patti. As my writing skills have improved writing short stories, I'm finding that writing longer isn't such a chore, that I can actually hold a longer story together.

This past year I've written to novelettes and loved the experience. Will I ever write a novel? It's doubtful but not impossible.

I have a quote taped to my computer that says, "Not every writer is a novelist." I find comfort in that.
