Show and Tell

Over at Book Life Now there's a very fine essay by Jeremy L. C. Jones, about showing vs telling in a story. It's something we know we're supposed to do when we're writing but tend to forget as the story flows from our fingertips. http://booklifenow.com/2010/01/you-never-say-i-love-you-but-i-know-how-you-feel/

Contained in the essay is this link to another show and tell essay by Robert J. Sawyer that gives such a perfect example that you want to slap your forehead and say, "Yeah. I get it now!" http://www.sfwriter.com/ow04.htm

I'm having a debate with an editor right now over show and tell. I don't think we're talking about the same thing so maybe I'll have a look at these essays.

I get the feeling that most of the newer editors want all show. Which is too bad because stories need a bit of a balance between the two. Of course, that's only my humble opinion.
